Estrogen

Apr 16, 2009 Author: Jerry K | Filed under: breast facts
What Is Estrogen? What is estrogen and how does it affect your health? If you’re interested in lowering your risk of breast cancer, or if you want to understand how to prevent recurrence after treatment, it’s important to understand the role that estrogen, and other hormones, play in your health. Get started by reading about estrogen.

Estrogen Definition and Functions

Estrogen Replacement Therapy or HRT: Low levels of estrogen can be caused by natural, surgical, or chemical menopause, and by estrogen suppression medications. Some side effects of low estrogen may include: hot flashes, headaches, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Some women may be able to take HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to help counteract these effects.

Long-term Use of Estrogen is Safe Within Limits

Estrogen and Breast Cancer: Some kinds of breast cancer are fueled by high amounts of estrogen. That’s the reason that estrogen suppression medications are an important part of treatment that prevents recurrence. Here is an overview of the main types of breast cancer: ductal, lobular, inflammatory, and Paget’s disease.

  • Breast Self-Exam

Mar 11, 2009 Author: Jerry K | Filed under: breast facts
Healthy Changes Through Life: Doing a monthly breast self exam is the best way to stay familiar with the cyclical changes in your breasts. You will get to know the territory better than your health care team, and will spot changes easily. Having an annual clinical exam helps document your breast health, so keep a regular appointment set up for that! Between puberty and menopause, your breasts will go through many changes, which are affected by hormones, diet, and exercise. Most of these changes are natural and healthy!

Teen Years (Puberty): In the teen years, with the start of your monthly cycle, your body enters the maturing process, and you gain curves and may notice skin changes (such as acne) and even hair may change color or texture. Breast tissue is developing during this time too, and may be dense and firm to begin with, especially if you are small-breasted. Family Resemblance: At this stage, it’s not too early to know your family health history, so ask your female relatives (mother, aunts, grandmother) if they had any fibrocystic problems with their breasts, or any regular cysts. If so, it’s likely that you may experience those too. Not to worry – cysts are benign – but you want to know where they are, and if they come and go, so they can be distinguished from other features in your breasts.’

More Curves and Kids (Childbearing Years): After your body is prepared for motherhood, if you conceive and bear children, and also if you breastfeed the children, that will bring on more changes in your breasts, as well as in the rest of your body. Breasts may become larger and more tender during pregnancy, and may need more support. Don’t neglect your BSE during this time, stay familiar with the changes. Remember that pregnancy and breastfeeding will help combine to lower your risk of breast cancer.

Maturity (Menopause): Menopause also brings changes in your breasts, as your estrogen and progesterone levels drop, your breast tissue may become less firm and may drape differently than during your teen and child-bearing years. Keep up with your breast self exams in these years too, so that the normal changes are familiar to you. Less dense breast tissue will seem to have more lumps and bumps, but remember that 90% of breast lumps are benign.

  • Breast Sagging

Sep 9, 2008 Author: Jerry K | Filed under: breast facts
Breast involution is a process where the milk-making system inside the breast shrinks because it’s not needed anymore. This happens either after weaning, or right after pregnancy if you don’t breastfeed at all, or during menopause. When the tissues inside breast shrink, and the skin surrounding it doesn’t, the breast can look ’empty’ and saggy. Over time, some fat gets deposited back to the breast so it will look somewhat fuller but sagging usually remains.

Common cause for sagging is when a woman loses weight. When you lose weight, some of that fat disappears from your breasts. Typically the skin and the ligaments inside the breasts do not retract accordingly, resulting in an ’empty’ looking breast that then sags.

The one thing you can try is to help your skin elasticity nutritionally – maybe it will also help those ligaments to stay in top fit. And if nutrition does not help sagging per se, at least you can have a good-looking shiny healthy skin on your breasts (as well as elsewhere). For example vitamin C is very important for the collagen synthesis within skin, and flax oil is important to keep skin from drying.

Anyway breast enhancement is a good way to prevent breast sagging.

  • Caffeine and Breast Enhancement

Jun 5, 2008 Author: Jerry K | Filed under: breast facts
Less than a decade, caffeine – which people have been consuming for centuries – was under a cloud because research had suggested it might be associated with birth defects, some forms of cancer, cardiovascular disease, behavioral problems, central nervous system disorders, reproductive problems, and nonmalignant breast lumps (fibrocystic disease) in women, just to name some of the concerns.

Some people can consume substantial amounts of coffee without apparent ill effects. Others are quite sensitive to it.

Women world over are increasingly turning to medical intervention to get larger, fuller and firmer breasts. And considering the high costs and risks associated with surgical procedures, herbal and natural alternatives are fast becoming the favorite among the beauty conscious. Natural alternatives are herbal supplements, massages and exercises. They give the desired result without changing the feel or creating loss of feeling.

A healthy lifestyle must be adhered to while taking herbal pills to get the desired effect. Pills have to be taken correctly and consistently. Caffeine and smoking cigarettes render your breast enhancement pill ineffective or less effective. Hence avoid smoking and caffeine while taking herbal supplements.

  • Caffeine and breast disease

Considerable publicity has also been given to the possibility that caffeine may be linked to the development of benign lumps in some women’s breasts, a condition known as fibrocystic disease. However, the FDA review stated, more reliable studies since then have failed to show any relationship “between benign breast disease and coffee consumption.”

Some, but not all studies have found that women with FBD drink more coffee than women without the disease. Eliminating caffeine for less than six months does not appear to be effective at reducing symptoms of FBD. However, long-term and complete avoidance of caffeine does reduce symptoms of FBD. Some women are more sensitive to effects of caffeine than others, so benefits of restricting caffeine are likely to vary from woman to woman. Caffeine is found in coffee, black tea, green tea, cola drinks, chocolate, and many over-the-counter drugs. A decrease in breast tenderness can take six months or more to occur after caffeine is eliminated. Breast lumpiness may not go away, but the pain often decreases.

  • Breast Feeding and Breast Enhancement

Jun 18, 2007 Author: Jerry K | Filed under: breast facts
Breast feeding provides nourishment as well as foster a loving bond between a mother and a child.

Breastfeeding is a natural way of bonding with your child. Nursing and holding the child close causes the brain to release a hormone-like substance called oxytocin. Its release is especially pronounced with skin-to-skin contact. This hormone has been called the “love hormone” or the “cuddle hormone” or the “bonding hormone”. It provides a sense of calm and well being and helps the mother and child to bond together. It is involved in those mothering feelings we experience after giving birth to a child.

Breastmilk contains a wonderful hormone called cholecystokinin (CCK), which induces sleepiness, both in the baby and the mother. It is the easiest method to put your child to sleep.

Also, while nursing, the child will usually get much more skin-to-skin contact with Mommy – and that can make a difference in how well your baby grows. Studies show how premature infants grow much better if they are massaged and touched a lot by a human hand, and the same surely applies to babies born at term.

If your breast is no longer full and attractive as it was before you started breastfeeding your child, try breast enhancement program. This will give you for a fuller, firmer shape – like before breastfeeding or even better!

  • The Process Of Breast Development

May 8, 2007 Author: Jerry K | Filed under: breast facts
The development of tender breast “buds” is usually the first sign of puberty in girls. Some girls notice breast growth as early as age 7 or 8, while others don’t start until age 13 or so. The timing is determined by your own biologic “clock” that tells your body to start producing high levels of female hormones. Breasts go through five “stages” of growth over the next five to six years, until their full maturity is reached by age 17 or 18. The final size of a girl’s breasts is determined by heredity and can range from very small (like bra size AA) to very full (such as size EE). Breast size varies greatly among women, and all sizes and shapes are normal and healthy.

The breast made up of milk glands and ducts, connective tissue and fat. In teenagers and young women the breast tissue is firm and dense, and then becomes softer and more fatty with age. There is no muscle tissue in the breast, which is why there are no exercises to make them bigger. However, the pectoral muscles that lie underneath the breasts can be firmed up to provide lift and shape (think of the “pecs” on male body builders.) Since the breasts do contain lots of fat cells, women will notice their bra size increases with weight gain.

However, the breast is often viewed as a symbol of femininity and sexual attractiveness, so it is normal for a young woman to have lots of questions about her breasts.

When do your breasts stop growing?

Your breasts usually continue to grow for about four years after your first period. But what we mean medically by breast “growth” can be very subtle. Breast tissue develops through five “stages” during puberty. Stage 1 is the flat, childhood chest. Stage 2 is breast “budding”, when the nipples swell and become tender. In Stage 3, breast tissue enlarges from gland and fat development. Young teens usually start their first period about this time. During Stage 4, the breasts may change only in contour (shape) rather than size, and the nipples protrude. Then in Stage 5, breast growth is completed. By age 17 or 18 you’ll know your final breast size.
